It has been announced that the “Ghost in the Shell Exhibition: Ghost and the Shell” will be held at TOKYO NODE, an information hub at Toranomon Hills, from Friday, January 30, 2026 to Sunday, April 5, 2026.

This exhibition, based on the original work by Masamune Shirow from 1989, represents the first large-scale exhibition in the series’ history that comprehensively covers all anime works and allows visitors to experience 30 years of Ghost in the Shell history across the entire series. The exhibition is being held with full cooperation from Production I.G, which has been responsible for animation production of successive works since the 1995 theatrical release “GHOST IN THE SHELL,” and Science SARU, which will handle the new anime series scheduled for broadcast in 2026.

The exhibition will feature works directed by legendary directors including Mamoru Oshii, Kenji Kamiyama, Kazuchika Kise, and Shinji Aramaki, as well as works related to the new anime series by Science SARU scheduled to air in 2026. Visitors will be able to appreciate and compare the unique themes and worldviews of each work.

Furthermore, a wide variety of original goods exclusive to the exhibition will be available for purchase during the exhibition period. Please look forward to special items that can only be obtained here. The exhibition is also planned to tour internationally, so please keep an eye on future developments as Ghost in the Shell expands globally. (※Updates will be announced sequentially)

Please look forward to the full scope of this unprecedented scale exhibition where anime, technology, and art converge.

<Exhibition Highlights>

●Exploring the Origins of All Series – Over 600 Archive Items Including Unreleased Materials

We will unveil over 600 precious materials including unreleased items such as original artwork, design documents, and storyboards created throughout the production process of the entire Ghost in the Shell series. The exhibition is structured to allow visitors to experience and compare the origins of each series through numerous archives and director interviews that will be publicly revealed for the first time at this exhibition, while also gaining insight into the reality of the production process. This provides a valuable opportunity to experience the creative process behind Ghost in the Shell that will captivate fans and newcomers alike.

●Unearthing the Future from the Depths of Information – Immersive Interactive Exhibitions

Immersive installations and interactive experiential exhibitions unique to TOKYO NODE are planned. Additionally, precious interview footage that decodes the series’ stories from each director’s perspective will be screened, allowing visitors to encounter new perspectives on Ghost in the Shell they never knew before. Of particular note is the “DIG” exhibition, where visitors themselves access the worldview and vast amount of information within Ghost in the Shell universe to unearth hints about the future. This will be a unique exhibition that allows deep immersion into the series’ worldview while using both thought and sensation to decode its meanings.

●Where “Past and Present” Intersect – Redefining “What Does It Mean to Be Human?”

This exhibition aims to go beyond mere viewing, creating a space where each visitor can encounter “their own Ghost in the Shell” through various exhibition experiences, overlaying the future vision that Ghost in the Shell has presented with changes in the real world. Furthermore, it reconsiders the universal question “What does it mean to be human?” that Ghost in the Shell has consistently explored, from the perspective of modern cutting-edge technologies such as AI and BMI (Brain-Machine Interface). By unraveling the relationship between “GHOST” and “SHELL,” the exhibition provides visitors with an opportunity to reflect on their own existence while traveling between “past and present.”

●Another Perspective on Ghost in the Shell – Collaborative Works with Creators Worldwide

During the exhibition period, installation exhibitions created in collaboration with contemporary artists and creators from Japan and abroad who have been influenced by Ghost in the Shell are also planned. This will be a valuable opportunity to experience the influence and diversity that Ghost in the Shell has had on creators around the world.

●Original Goods and Unique Cross-Series Shop

In addition to original goods exclusive to this exhibition, we will also feature an original shop that can only be realized through this cross-series exhibition. Visitors can enjoy special shopping experiences available nowhere else.

Director Mamoru Oshii’s Comment

Ghost and Shell. I think their relationship is that the Shell exists within the Ghost – that’s what “Ghost in the Shell” is about. The Ghost dwells not only in people, but also in dolls and plants. Something harmonious and peaceful. Something that whispers, like the wind.

The common thread among these series works is their futuristic vision. Based on the worldview of the original manga, each director has created their works, but none have strayed even a step from Shirow Masamune’s policy. They cannot stray from it. That’s precisely why all of them can be called spin-offs, and that’s also what makes these works so good.

If this exhibition is truly to be cross-cutting, I believe there should be entrances in random order, as befits subculture. I want people to consider not only anime, but also the original manga and live-action films in their field of vision. Only then will it truly become a cross-cutting exhibition, in my opinion.
